Climate Counts Scorecard Rates Companies on Commitment to Fighting Global Warming

June 19, 2007

Climate Counts, a new nonprofit organization, has issued its first scorecard on corporate climate change leadership. The scorecard aims to help consumers judge how serious companies are about halting global warming and how they compare to other companies in their sector.

Companies were awarded points on four major factors:

  • Their measurement of their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Their goals and programs for reducing their climate change impacts.
  • Their support for—or opposition to—public policies that could involve mandatory business actions to address climate change.
  • Their public reporting on their emissions, risks, and actions.

The scores were used to rank participating companies, by industry, and to classify companies according to whether they were "stuck," "starting," or "striding." Climate Counts intends to update the scorecard annually, based on further information the companies provide.

McDonald's welcomed the opportunity to participate in the scorecard initiative. ''It would be terrific if the Climate Counts scorecard triggers consumers to learn more about what we are doing,'' said Bob Langert, Vice President for Corporate Social Responsibility. "We hope CSR performance will come to have more influence on consumers' purchasing habits."

McDonald's was ranked second among food service companies and designated "a better choice for the climate-conscious consumer." The rating recognizes our initial efforts to measure our global warming impacts, our work to reduce our restaurants' electrical energy use and other climate change initiatives, and our public reporting of our efforts, including our 2006 Worldwide Corporate Responsibility Report.
