McDonald's UK to Reuse Cooking Oil in Trucks

July 02, 2007

McDonald's has announced that it will reuse its supply of cooking oil in order to manufacture bio-diesel fuel for its fleet of UK delivery vehicles.

The fast food chain is creating bio-diesel by combining rapeseed oil and cooking oil in a bid to cut its carbon emissions.

Every vehicle in the 155-strong delivery fleet will be converted to run on the new fuel.

Oil from around 900 McDonald's restaurants will be used in the venture and the company expects to cut carbon emissions by 1,675 tonnes a year through the project.

McDonald's senior vice president Matthew Howe said: “This is a great example of how businesses can work together to help the environment, and is a natural complement to the work we are doing to our delivery schedules to cut food miles and fuel consumption.

"We don't intend to stop here. Our work with the Carbon Trust will help us find more ways, big and small, to reduce our carbon impact across the whole of our business."

At first, the bio-diesel used will consist of 85 per cent used cooking oil, collected from McDonald's restaurants, and 15 per cent pure rapeseed oil. It aims to phase out the use of rapeseed oil in the future.

The retailer added that it was working on a range of other initiatives spanning recycling and packaging to reduce its carbon emissions.
