McDonald's Animal Welfare Auditing Program - 10 years of Progress

May 21, 2009

3,500 animal welfare audits and counting…

Ten years ago, McDonald’s began working with its suppliers and world renowned animal welfare expert, Dr. Temple Grandin, to develop a standardized auditing program for meat abattoir facilities. Under the program, every beef, pork, and poultry abattoir plant that serves the McDonald’s supply chain is required to be audited annually by independent firms or McDonald’s staff.

According to Dr. Grandin, the auditing program put in place by McDonald’s and others in the industry, has had a huge impact. Says Grandin, “When the auditing program started in 1999, I saw more change than I had seen in 25 years prior to that.”

Dr. Grandin is a member of the McDonald’s USA Animal Welfare Council and currently works closely with McDonald’s to oversee auditor training to ensure that its suppliers keep up with improvements in animal handling practices.
