On Arbor Day, Grab a Burger, Plant a Tree

April 22, 2009

By Bob Von Sternberg, Star Tribune

On Arbor Day, fast food will meet slow growth.

Minnesotans can pick up a red pine seedling -- the official state tree -- at McDonald's restaurants on April 24, the day tree-planting has been encouraged for more than a century.

McDonald's, the state's forest industry and KARE-TV plan to give away 57,000 of the seedlings that day. No purchase is necessary.

It's the eighth year the seedlings have been given away.

The red (or Norway) pine (Pinus resinosa) has been the official state tree since 1953. Mature red pines are tall, stately trees that reach heights of 60 to nearly 150 feet. They can live as long as 400 years.

Nationwide, according to the Arbor Day Foundation, volunteers planted an estimated 8.5 million trees last year.
